What is Theatre In The Square

“Gutsy…grand-slam production…seasoned professionalism…powerhouse performance…well-tuned ensemble…likely to be the season’s most talked about production…rich, rewarding and insightful evening of theatre...

Those are just a few samples of the kinds of things critics were saying about Theatre In The Square last season. But for a theatre in its 27th year, one would expect that we have learned to do a few things rights. Some who have been with us a while think we have been getting it right for the very beginning. As one patron remarked in recalling our widely ranging programming: “Every season you take us on a ride for the whole year!”

Come join us for the trip. Our big 26th has more of the same kind of flash and sass, glitz and grit, and just plain heart-tugging aisle-rolling, mind-expanding great theatre.

Just be sure and buckle up!

Palmer Wells, Producing Director

From the AJC 2005 Ultimate Guide
A Beacon on the Square
With its ivy-clad patio and postcard-perfect setting, Marietta's Theatre in the Square is hands-down the best suburban playhouse in the area. But a pretty building does not always good theater make. Rather, it's producing artistic directors Palmer Wells' smart choice of plays --- from African-American classics to the latest by Richard Greenberg (Take Me Out) and Stephen Adly Guirgis (Jesus Hopped the A Train).

Hop on board with us -- the ride continues...

A space hardly the size of a Victorian parlor seated 85 theatre-hungry patrons in Theatre in the Square’s first home. Located in the ancient freight storage room behind the old Marietta train depot, theatregoers dodged droplets from a leaky roof and strained to hear actors over the clatter of the nearby C & S trains. Whether it seems like eons or only yesterday since Sept. 10, 1982 when the Theatre opened with On Golden Pond, one thing is certain: A lot has happened in this little theatre. First, there have been 24 world premieres -- 11 of them developed or commissioned by the Theatre -- and countless regional premieres. No mean accomplishment. And the more than 215 widely diverse productions over the years have been memorable for their moments of challenge and laughter, heartbreak and joyfulness. Some have made even more than just a splash of daring and controversy. One notable production even became the lightning rod in a controversy that got the Theatre worldwide media attention. But, regardless of the subject matter quality has always been the emphasis. That emphasis paid off in a lot of ways – patron loyalty, citations and honors (the Governor’s Award for the Arts, for one) and a string of “Bests” in recognition from newspaper reviewers and civic organizations. With the 2006-07 season, Theatre in the Square celebrated its silver anniversary, and it is still growing (4,000 season subscribers), staging diverse works, and showcasing the best acting, writing and technical talent the region has to offer.

Why is there a Theatre in the Square?

The purpose of Theatre in the Square is to carry on a tradition of live theatre as an important art form, as well as to provide the opportunity to enjoy or participate in professional theatre for all citizens of metro-Atlanta and northwest Georgia. The theatre not only enhances the quality of life within the community, but also pays performers, technicians, directors, designers, and writers, thereby encouraging local theater artists to stretch their imaginations, expand their skills, and develop original works.

The theatre participates in local, regional and national outlets for showcasing our work and our community (i.e., arts festivals, media coverage, touring shows). As a result, it continues to be an integral part of our community and region by offering quality work and encouraging new talent. Consequently, it generates works that will appeal on a national level in representing the character, history, and assets of our region.
